One in four former NFL players found to have had degenerative brain disease CTE

A study released Tuesday found that at least one in four former NFL players who died between 2016 and 2021 had chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Of 878 players who died in that period, 235 donated their brains for research, and 215 tested positive for CTE. The degenerative disease, linked to repeated head blows including concussions, can only be definitively diagnosed after death, with symptoms including memory loss, dementia and mood disorders.
