Chinese artist famed for Mao sculptures jailed three years for 'slandering heroes'

Gao Zhen, a prominent Chinese artist known for provocative sculptures of Mao Zedong, has been sentenced to three years in prison for slandering China's "heroes and martyrs". He had already spent two years in detention since being arrested while visiting China with his family. The case has drawn international condemnation, particularly because the artworks cited in the charges were created more than a decade before the law used to prosecute him was enacted.
