German psychiatrist: psychiatric care reform failed patients with addictions
German psychiatrist Dr Friedrich Leidinger says the country's psychiatric care reform has failed to adequately support severely ill patients who also struggle with drug or alcohol addiction. In Cologne alone there are over 10,000 homeless people, with an estimated 80 percent suffering from mental illness. He argues the system needs deep structural changes to reach this most vulnerable patient group.
