Spider webs are an eDNA goldmine for tracking wildlife, scientists find

Scientists have identified spider webs as a rich source of environmental DNA (eDNA), since the naturally sticky webs trap genetic material from the spiders themselves and from other organisms in the environment. The technique can be used to monitor biodiversity, track species migration and detect invasive species without direct observation. It builds on a decade of advances in eDNA surveillance using samples from soil, water and air.
