Loneliness rewires the brain and drives alcohol use, new study finds

Researchers at Northwestern University and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies identified a specific neural circuit through which social isolation increases alcohol consumption in male mice while reducing it in females. Led by Dr Reesha Patel, the study is the first to pinpoint the brain mechanism linking loneliness to drinking. The findings were published in Nature Neuroscience.
