Nuclear tests revealed anomaly in Earth's outer core
Geophysicist Dr. Ying Zhou of Virginia Tech used data from 18 years of nuclear tests conducted at Mururoa Atoll in French Polynesia to detect a large anomaly in Earth's outer core. The outer core is a layer of liquid metal surrounding the solid inner core, located roughly 2,900 km below the surface. Seismic waves generated by the nuclear explosions served as a tool to probe the planet's interior.
