ALMA telescopes reveal hot spots and warped atmosphere of Betelgeuse

Astronomers used the ALMA radio telescope network to capture exceptionally detailed images of the surface of Betelgeuse, a red supergiant in the constellation Orion. The new data reveals long-lived, heated regions and a clearly deformed atmosphere surrounding the star. The observations offer new insights into the dynamics of this massive stellar object.
