Ocean surface temperatures hit record high as El Niño amplifies warming

On August 22, the global average daily sea surface temperature hit its highest level since records began in 1979, according to the EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service. El Niño is adding extra heat on top of decades of human-driven warming from fossil fuel combustion. Copernicus strategic climate lead Samantha Burgess warned the record signals an ocean "under growing stress," with rising risks to marine ecosystems and coastal communities.
