A roughly 2,700 km sand berm has divided Western Sahara for nearly 40 years, surrounded by millions of landmines, bunkers and military outposts — the result of a dispute between Morocco and Sahrawi forces over control of the territory. Since fighting resumed in 2020 after nearly three decades of ceasefire, people have been dying on both sides of the wall. The Western Sahara conflict remains one of the world's longest unresolved territorial disputes.
