IBM unveils first mainframe chip to natively run both Arm and Z workloads

IBM revealed at the Hot Chips conference a new mainframe processor whose cores can natively execute both IBM's Z instruction set and Arm's, switching between them in nanoseconds. The chip will power the next generation of IBM Z and LinuxONE systems, letting banks, insurers and governments run modern Arm-native AI software alongside their legacy z/OS workloads. It is the world's first dual-architecture mainframe processor.
