Children still outlearn AI at language acquisition — and science can't explain why

Large language models like GPT, Claude and DeepSeek can process up to a hundred thousand times more words than a person encounters in a lifetime, yet children still learn language far more efficiently. Infants begin grasping language around their first birthday using a tiny fraction of the data AI requires. Scientists do not yet understand the biological mechanism that makes the human brain so extraordinarily sample-efficient.
