NASA-funded project turns plastic waste into edible cookies for astronauts

NASA-funded researchers have developed a process using specially engineered yeasts to convert plastics and agricultural waste into edible proteins, fats and flavourings. The resulting slurry is shaped into disc-like cookies by a 3D printer. The project aims to provide a sustainable food source for astronauts on long-duration space missions.
