Thousands of whales off Greenland as warming opens new feeding grounds
Over the past 20 years, sea surface temperatures off eastern Greenland have risen by about 1°C and ice cover in the Fram Strait has shrunk dramatically, opening rich coastal feeding grounds to whales. Scientists estimate that around 4,000 humpbacks and 6,000 fin whales now spend their summers in these waters, heavily feeding on local fish and krill. Researchers warn the mass presence of these mammals is disrupting the local ecosystem.
