Exoplanet Gliese 523b puzzles scientists — 23 times Earth's mass, barely twice its size
Astronomers have described the exoplanet Gliese 523b, which has a radius 2.55 times that of Earth but a mass 23.5 times greater, making it exceptionally dense for a rocky planet. It also follows an unusually atypical orbit that does not fit standard models of how massive rocky planets form. The finding may prompt scientists to rethink current theories of planetary formation.
