Kazakhstan holds parliament election with opposition and independents barred

Kazakhstan held snap elections on Sunday, 23 August, for the Kurultai — a new single-chamber parliament created by a sweeping constitutional reform. Opposition parties and independent candidates were barred from standing. The vote takes place amid sharply restricted political competition.
