Fleet of 17 spacecraft reveals solar ejection is surprisingly lopsided

A record fleet of 17 spacecraft scattered across the solar system tracked a coronal mass ejection (CME) that erupted on 15 December 2024 and found it to be surprisingly lopsided, concealing a hidden cloud of charged particles aimed at Earth. CMEs pose serious radiation hazards to astronauts, satellites and airline passengers, while also producing auroras. The finding challenges existing models of how CMEs expand through the solar system.
