Brazil grows sweet potatoes and chickpeas to feed future space missions
Agronomists at Brazil's Instituto Agronômico de Campinas (IAC), one of the world's oldest agricultural research centres, are engineering sweet potatoes and chickpeas to sustain astronauts on long-duration space missions. The crops are being adapted to survive extreme conditions including low gravity, high radiation and confined spaces. Researchers also hope the findings will help improve yields on Earth under drought and heat stress.
