Siberia's 'gateway to hell' crater Batagaika keeps growing — scientists alarmed
The Batagaika crater in Yakutia, Siberia — nicknamed "the gateway to hell" — is continuing to grow as permafrost thaws. It now stretches roughly one kilometre in length, nearly one kilometre wide and 50 metres deep. Scientists warn that its expansion is a stark indicator of accelerating climate change in the far north.
