Norway pays authors for AI training data and releases models for free

Norway has become the first country to release AI models trained on copyright-protected content while paying the authors of that content. The project is run by the National Library under director Aase Wetaas. The goal is not to compete with OpenAI but to protect the Norwegian language and the country's digital independence.
