First mainland Australian mammal dies from H5 bird flu

A long-nosed fur seal found dead on Wednesday at Beachport, South Australia, is the first confirmed H5 bird flu fatality in a mammal on the Australian mainland. The case follows three mass mortality events involving more than 1,000 greater crested terns on offshore islands. The highly pathogenic H5 strain has killed millions of birds globally and has already crossed into mammal species including elephant seals.
