South Korean city Ulsan bets $37m on underwater AI data centers

The South Korean city of Ulsan is partnering with the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) to develop a standardised underwater data center model for AI workloads. The project has a combined budget of KRW 51.1 billion (about $37 million) and runs through 2030. Seawater cooling could eliminate the need for conventional mechanical refrigeration, easing land and power constraints.
