Germany suffered a surprise 0-3 defeat to Slovenia in their opening Group A match at the European volleyball championship in Istanbul's Sinan Erdem Arena, played before a near-empty crowd. Germany are regular Nations League participants and the loss complicates their group-stage situation from the outset. Poland, who open their campaign against Hungary on Saturday, will face both Germany and Slovenia in the group stage.
