Induced hibernation wipes out over half of mice's synapses — yet memories survive

Neuroscientist Kazumasa Tanaka's team at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology induced a hibernation-like state in mice that eliminated more than half of their synaptic connections. Despite this massive loss, the mice retained previously formed memories, challenging the leading hypothesis that memories are stored in the physical strength and size of synapses. The study was published in the journal Science.
