Éric Rohmer's lost 1946 novel 'Élisabeth' republished to rave reviews

"Élisabeth", written in 1946 by 24-year-old Maurice Schérer — later known as New Wave director Éric Rohmer — has been republished with an English translation, eight decades after its first appearance and 16 years after the author's death. The novel follows young lovers in prewar provincial France and is seen by critics as a precursor to Rohmer's cinematic work. Schérer published it under the pseudonym Gilbert Cordier to shield his Catholic family from scandal, but it sank without trace on first release.
