Penn State scientists use thunderstorms and fiber-optic cables to image Earth's interior
Researchers at Penn State have found that seismic energy from thunderstorms can be detected by underground fiber-optic cables and used to image the Earth's interior. The technique offers a middle ground between waiting for natural earthquakes and deliberately triggering seismic events with explosives. Because fiber-optic networks are widespread, the method could greatly expand the geographic reach of subsurface imaging.
