Expired contactless cards can still be used to make real purchases, researchers find

Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst have shown that an expired contactless card — a so-called "zombie card" — can complete a real transaction at a checkout terminal, because the expiry date is not covered by the card's cryptographic signature. The attack requires physical possession of a discarded card and two standard smartphones. Visa cards were found to be susceptible; while EMV protections can detect the relay, they are optional and were disabled on every card and terminal tested. Neither Visa nor the affected banks have confirmed that a fix is planned.
