Thunder as a geological probe — seismologists use "thunderquakes" to survey underground geology

Seismologists measured the varying speeds of seismic waves generated by lightning strikes — dubbed "thunderquakes" — to survey underground geological structures in areas with little natural seismic activity. The findings were published in the journal Nature. The technique could open up new ways to study geology in seismically quiet regions.
