Japan's farmers switch to night shifts to escape deadly summer heat
Japanese farmers are increasingly switching to nocturnal working hours to avoid dangerous daytime summer temperatures. Flower grower Motoaki Iijima, located north of Tokyo, harvests his crop in an illuminated greenhouse long after sunset, while poultry farmer Tetsuya Usuba wakes his flock at 2:30 am to feed. The dramatic shift was prompted in part by a worker suffering heatstroke while picking sunflowers three summers ago.
