Hormone GDF15 protects the liver from inflammation even without weight loss
Researchers at McMaster University have found that the hormone GDF15, already known for suppressing appetite and aiding weight loss, activates a previously unknown brain-to-liver signalling pathway. This pathway triggers the release of glucocorticoids, which dampen immune activity and protect the liver from inflammation and scarring. The discovery could point toward new liver-disease treatments that work independently of weight loss.
