The coastguard rescued more than 300 migrants, including 40 children, off the coast of Mauritania in the Atlantic Ocean. Thousands of people have for years attempted the perilous Atlantic route on overloaded and often dilapidated boats, seeking to reach Europe via Spain's Canary Islands. The route is considered one of the world's deadliest migration paths.
