Senegal's Saint-Louis: a forgotten hub of the slave trade whose traces are fading
The island of Saint-Louis in northern Senegal was a significant hub of the transatlantic slave trade through which tens of thousands of Africans passed, yet it is rarely mentioned in historical accounts of the trade. A dilapidated two-century-old building on the island stands as one of the few physical testaments to this past. The traces of its history are quickly and quietly disappearing.
