Climate professor warns wildfires are accelerating permafrost thaw tipping point

Prof. Gustaf Hugelius of Stockholm University's Bolin Centre warns that heatwaves and wildfires are accelerating the thaw of permafrost, which holds three times more carbon than all living vegetation on Earth. Thawing releases methane and CO₂, risking irreversible tipping points. Hugelius warns that vast tundra and peatland regions are approaching thresholds beyond which changes cannot be undone.
