This summer's heatwaves killed hundreds of swifts in Polish cities
This summer's heatwaves proved devastating for urban birds in Poland, with wildlife rehabilitation centres receiving up to 9–10 times more common swift chicks than in previous years. Metal rooftops and concrete urban heat islands reached temperatures lethal for nesting birds, forcing volunteers to walk through housing estates collecting fallen chicks in cardboard boxes. Experts warn that Polish cities are deeply ill-equipped for rising temperatures, with swifts particularly vulnerable due to nesting in roof crevices and gutters.
