NASA-funded mission to rescue Swift space telescope ends in failure — observatory to burn up this year

The commercially operated LINK spacecraft, funded by NASA, was meant to boost the Swift observatory to a higher orbit and extend its operational life. After launch, LINK encountered several technical problems, and the mission has now officially been declared a failure. Swift is expected to re-enter Earth's atmosphere and burn up by the end of this year.
