Russia fires missiles near disputed islands, Japan lodges protest
Russia's Pacific Fleet fired Bastion surface-to-ship missiles from Etorofu, the largest island in the disputed archipelago known as the Kuril Islands by Moscow and the Northern Territories by Tokyo, hitting simulated targets approximately 300 km away. Japan condemned the drills, which follow Vladimir Putin's visit to the islands last week. The exercises have further inflamed already tense relations between the two countries.
