US national debt tops $40 trillion after doubling in a decade

The US national debt has surpassed $40 trillion, having doubled in less than a decade. At the same time, the interest rate on 30-year Treasury bonds reached its highest level in nearly 20 years, pushing up the cost of servicing the debt further.
