Just 1% of US lawmakers come from the working class — here's why

Only about 1% of US Congress members have a working-class background, leaving workers' interests largely unrepresented in legislation. Financial barriers, lack of political networks and the demands of running a campaign effectively shut out ordinary workers from seeking office. The pattern is seen across most of the world's democratic political institutions, not just in the United States.
