Viking runes have been found carved inside Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, left by Norse travellers who knew Constantinople as Miklagard — the "Great City". Historians have long debated how and why the inscriptions appeared there roughly 1,000 years ago. One of the best-known runes contains a name that scholars are still working to identify.
