Portuguese man-o'-war swarms European beaches — don't touch it
The Portuguese man-o'-war (Physalia physalis) is appearing in unusually high numbers on European beaches this summer. Despite its colourful appearance, its tentacles deliver an extremely painful sting that can leave lasting effects. Beachgoers are warned not to touch the creature even when it is washed ashore and appears lifeless.
