US national debt tops $40 trillion for the first time ever

US gross national debt has surpassed $40 trillion for the first time, according to government data released Wednesday. The surge was partly fuelled by President Donald Trump's invalidated tariffs and has drawn bipartisan criticism, since Trump had promised to cut public spending during his 2024 presidential campaign.
