Honda eyes hybrid HR-V and Acura ADX but says the financials must work first

Honda has 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter hybrids that could work in these two models.

The company says getting the financials right could be a challenge, though.

Growth in the luxury hybrid market sets the groundwork for a hybrid ADX.

Honda sees nothing standing in the way of hybrid versions of the HR-V and Acura ADX, but it isn’t ready to say either project is underway. Both come with the same condition attached, the one that decides most product decisions in this business. Someone has to make the spreadsheet work first.

Electrifying the HR-V and ADX would put Honda back on level ground with rivals it currently trails, since the Kia Niro, Subaru Crosstrek, and Toyota Corolla Cross all come with hybrid options. Honda hardly needs to start from scratch, either. The CR-V, Accord, and Civic already use hybrid systems that could, in theory, be adapted to the two smaller crossovers.

Asked by Auto News at Monterey Car Week whether the HR-V and ADX were in line for electrified powertrains, American Honda product planning chief Gary Robinson left the door open without walking through it.

“We won’t talk about when and if hybrids are coming in those vehicles, but I don’t know that there’s any reason why not,” he said. “It’s a cost-conscious segment so there’s always a little bit of a challenge there, specifically on the Honda side.” Carscoops has reached out to Honda to see if we can glean any more information about its possible future hybrid plans.

Luxury Hybrid Push

Overseas, Honda already sells a hybrid version of the HR-V , though it differs from the model sold in the United States. American Honda sales boss Lance Woelfer noted that the automaker has, up until this point, focused on adding hybrids to vehicles that sell in high numbers and produce large margins, which probably explains why the HR-V has so far missed out on a hybrid option.

With this in mind, it’s possible the Acura ADX could get a hybrid option first, as the broader luxury market is experiencing an ongoing shift towards hybrids. According to Robinson, Honda is “expecting an even higher percentage of electric vehicles in the luxury segment going forward,” and this could give it the impetus to launch a hybrid ADX.
