Switzerland seeks extra $1.2 billion for air defence in 2026 budget

The Swiss government has asked parliament to approve an additional 970 million Swiss francs ($1.2 billion) for air defence in the 2026 budget, citing an elevated threat environment and long lead times for defence equipment. The funds include 250 million francs for short-range ground-based air defence, 650 million for medium-range systems, and 60 million for radar, plus 10 million for counter-drone systems. Switzerland separately plans to spend 1 billion francs on Diehl's IRIS-T SLM medium-range air defence system.
