AI companies bulk-buy and destroy second-hand books to train their models

American and Chinese AI companies are reportedly bulk-buying books from foreign second-hand bookshops and then destroying them to use as training data for their models. Professor Dariusz Jemielniak warned that this results in the loss of unique copies while the companies share none of the value created with authors or society — benefiting only their shareholders.
