Norwegian lemming is one of the world's evolutionarily youngest mammals
Researchers at Stockholm University have used genetic sequencing to determine that the Norwegian lemming (Lemmus lemmus) is one of the most evolutionarily young mammal species on Earth. The species diverged from its closest relative, the West Siberian lemming, roughly 35,000 years ago during the last ice age. The findings were published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
