NASA abandons robotic mission to rescue Swift gamma-ray telescope
NASA and startup Katalyst Space Technologies have announced they are abandoning a robotic mission to rescue the Neil Gehrels Swift gamma-ray observatory from an impending reentry. The rescue satellite Link, about the size of a refrigerator, launched on July 3 and was meant to capture Swift with three robotic arms and boost it to a higher, safer orbit. Ongoing attitude-control issues aboard Link will prevent it from completing the rescue, though the spacecraft remains functional and Katalyst said it may still manoeuvre close enough to Swift for a limited demonstration.
