Private mission to rescue NASA's Swift telescope fails after probe loses control

NASA has officially ended attempts to boost the Swift Observatory's orbit after private rescue spacecraft LINK, built by Katalyst Space and launched July 3 on a Northrop Grumman Pegasus XL rocket, began spinning uncontrollably about three weeks after launch. The agency announced the failure on August 19, citing ongoing attitude control problems. NASA has not canceled the mission outright — LINK will still attempt a rendezvous with Swift to demonstrate proximity operations.
