FCC Scraps Gigabit Speed Goal, Calling It Unfair to Slower Technologies
The FCC, led by Republican chairman Brendan Carr, has eliminated the long-term broadband speed goal of 1Gbps download and 500Mbps upload set during the Biden administration. The commission declared the gigabit goal was not "technologically neutral," arguing it was unfair to slower technologies. The current broadband benchmark of 100Mbps download and 20Mbps upload, set in 2024, remains in place.
