Colombia earthquake devastates one of the country's poorest and most neglected regions

The earthquake that struck Colombia earlier this month has hit hardest in the Chocó region, one of the country's most remote and neglected areas, long beset by high poverty, poor infrastructure, and underfunded health and education services. Recovery will be especially difficult given the region's chronic structural problems and limited state presence. The disaster has compounded existing hardship for some of Colombia's most vulnerable communities.
