Portugal bans burqas and niqabs with fines of up to €3,000
Portugal has introduced a ban on wearing burqas and niqabs in public spaces, with fines of up to €3,000 for violations. The law was pushed through by the right-wing Chega party and signed by President Antonio Jose Seguro against the wishes of his own Socialist camp. Portugal thus joins other EU countries that have enacted similar restrictions.
