NASA photographs crater left by SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket that struck the Moon

NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) has imaged the impact site left by an errant SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage that struck the Moon on August 5, 2026, near Einstein Crater at around 8,690 kph (5,400 mph). The photos were taken on August 11 and 12 from multiple angles using the LROC high-resolution camera, which circles the Moon every 117 minutes. Before-and-after images show the newly formed crater clearly.
